Don’t just observe history from the outside (like passing through a museum) – live it by renting one of the most unique Celtic Castles Ireland has to offer!
You will experience medieval Ireland of many centuries ago by actually staying in the castle. It has been carefully furnished with antiques to maintain that experience (and, oh yes, cobwebs!).

Upon entering the medieval entrance arch, visitors to the Castle have, almost without exception, described their first impression as: “if having just stepped from a time machine, an immediate sense of having been transported back in time through turbulent centuries of Irish history. The impact of this rare and authentic castle’s historic appeal and significance is literally instant. Six-feet thick battle-impenetrable walls, winding spiral stone staircase, oak-beamed ceilings and flagstone floors will offer you this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience how they lived back in 1490 when the Castle was built.”

The Castle is a five-storey stone building. On the ground floor is the Medieval dining room with alcoves and arches, and is originally where the horses were kept and fed. It adjoins the fully equipped kitchen (with all mod. cons discreetly incorporated), and a w.c. You enter through one of two entrance doors - one leads into the Kitchen (passing a ground level toilet room), which then leads onto the Dining Room, while the other external separate gated entrance door opens at the beginning of the spiral stone staircase, and also leads into the Dining Room.

Described by an Irish Historian as having been built during the ‘Golden Age of castle-building’, Ballyhannon Castle is the best example of Celtic Castles Ireland provides. As we begin the spiral staircase upwards into this historic structure, on the first level we come to a bedroom with an antique 4-poster king size bed (to sleep 2 people). Next, moving upwards, is the first bathroom (lavatory, wash-hand basin and shower), and upwards again, we come to the twin bedroom which has a large double bed and a bunk-bed (to sleep 4 people) and has a cushioned deep-window alcove (5 feet). Upwards again, we come to another bathroom (lavatory, wash-hand basin and bath-with-shower) and adjacent is the Great (sitting) Room complete with Minstrel’s Gallery & inglenook fireplace. The next level up brings us to the third bedroom, with an antique 4-poster king size bed (to sleep 2 people), and at the top of the tower, the largest room consists of a forth bedroom with an antique 4-poster super king bed (to sleep 2 people), making sleeping for up to 10 guests (and futons are available for more).

Also exceptional among Celtic Castles Ireland still has surviving is what any castle wouldn’t be complete without……a DUNGEON!!!!!!!!! This is located above the Great Room. We will be only too happy to explain why such dungeons were located in this area of the castle, rather than in the basement as many believe.

Sleeping Accommodation - 10+ people: 3 bedrooms with four-poster king sized beds, and a family room for 4 with a large double bed and bunk beds (and futons for more).
